Authentic Collaborative Learning

Schoolcraft Learning Community is an Expeditionary Learning Charter School located in Bemidji, MN.

Under the expert leadership of Technology Integration Specialist Stacy Bender-Fayette, Schoolcraft has partnered with Bemidji State University faculty and students for a wide variety of projects over the last few years focusing on environmental education, differentiated instruction and technology integration.

For this project three innovative second and third grade teachers, Carla Patch, Shanna Reiners and Nikki Rice, agreed to share their students and curriculum planning with K-6 licensure candidates learning the methods of Social Studies instruction.

Students in both schools were partnered for two projects in distance education. In the first the children at Schoolcraft conducted research on animals and their habitats. Students created content and visuals related to their research, and these were uploaded into VoiceThreads. The Bemidji students were partnered one-to-one with the SchoolCraft students and gave individualized feedback to these students.

Next, the SchoolCraft faculty shared some of their ideas for best practice instruction around sustainability themes.

Finally, Schoolcraft faculty synthesized some of the key learning questions being raised by their students. The Bemidji students were challenged to create curriculum that would answer those important student questions. The rest is, well, history.
